Why we're doing it
A ventilator provides mechanical ventilation by
moving breathable air
into and out of the lungs,
to deliver breaths to a
patient who is physically unable to breathe, or breathing insufficiently.
User-friendly portable ventilators show great potential for
widespread use in pre-hospital or
rural settings,
including
ambulances.
They provide a vast
improvement on the usual bag-method of ventilation,
that
offers
no control
over metrics such as flow
rate, volume or pressure and requires constant input from a trained professional.
